I haven’t updated this page since COVID began to rage. It’s been a tough year plus but I wanted to spotlight some new publications.

In fall 2020, Oxford University Press published my graphic history, done in collaboration with the fantastic artist Liz Clarke. Witness to the Age of Revolution: The Odyssey of Juan Bautista Tupac Amaru examines the fascinating and tragic life of the brother of Tupac Amaru. Imprisoned in Ceuta for more than thirty years, he reached Buenos Aires in 1822 and wrote his memoirs, a stunning account of imprisonment and enlightenment. Witness received the 2021 PROSE Award from the Association of American Publishers.

Carlos Aguirre and I collaborated on a book of essays on the masterful Peruvian historian Alberto Flores Galindo. Our essays examine topics such as “Tito FG” and the Cuban Revolution, Peru’s Wars of Independence, and the Shining Path. We are pleased to have helped spark a return to his work.

Michael Lazzara and I published a translation of José Carlos Agüero’s fascinating memoirs and ruminations, The Surrendered: Reflections by a Son of Shining Path (Duke University Press, 2021). In addition to the original text, we have included an introduction that contextualizes his work and contributions as well as a lengthy interview with the author about life growing up with Shining Path parents and his views on trauma, forgiveness, and memory.

Witness to the Age of Revolution: The Odyssey of Juan Bautista Tupac examina la fascinante y trágica historia del hermano de Tupac Amaru.
